Why choose an American Disc Jockey Association member?
The American Disc Jockey Association is a non-profit National DJ association. Thus, its incentive isn't profit - but rather the benefit of the DJ industry and consumers looking for a disc jockey. This webpage includes QUESTIONS TO ASK BEFORE HIRING YOUR ENTERTAINER. These questions were developed to protect prospective DJ clients. The ADJA represents thousands of disc jockeys so we recommend that you screen for a professional that will have the personality you desire and offer you the service that you need.
The Association provides:
Representation - The ADJA represents thousands of disc jockeys across the United States. Consumers have an organization to go to for disc jockey related questions, concerns or complaints. Members are encouraged to maintain high standards and deliver what they promise.
Education - The ADJA sponsors educational programs, national conventions and local chapters so that active disc jockeys can learn to become better entertainers, emcees and business people. Consumers are also educated through the ADJA's national website, www.adja.org. The ADJA has submitted various articles and interviews that appear in national magazines and newspapers.
Public Relations - The ADJA is actively working on media exposure to create public awareness. As the public learns what to expect from a professional disc jockey, more and more disc jockeys will become active members and have no choice but to behave in an ethical, professional manner since their reputation is at stake. The ADJA welcomes consumer questions, comments or complaints.
How much should you pay for your Disc Jockey?:
You will find that professional disc jockeys will average $750.00 to $1,500.00 for services that include delivery, set-up and tear-down of a professional sound system, emcee services, coordination, music programming and 3 to 6 hours of entertainment. Other options that may or may not be included would include lighting effects, Karaoke equipment, props, dancers, a second entertainer, etc. Keep in mind that rates vary based on popularity, personality, professionalism, service, talent, creativity and other factors. You must decide if you simply need someone to program music for the evening or if you need a multi-talented entertainer, coordinator, emcee and music programmer. Whatever you spend on your disc jockey, we remind you to READ YOUR CONTRACT before signing an agreement. If you want a specific entertainer, make sure it is guaranteed in writing. Understanding the terms of agreement will help you avoid disappointment on the day of your event.
10 questions to ask before hiring your DJ:
1) Are we guaranteed the DJ of our choice on the day of our event? (A written contract with your specific DJ protects you from unscrupulous operators.)
2) How many years of experience do you have? (Experience brings a knowledge of common problems and situations. Be sure your DJ has experience with your type of event)
3) May we call your references? (References are a major part of the entertainment business.)
4) Do you belong to any professional associations or trade groups? (an involved business person shows a willingness to learn, network and share ideas. Belonging to a professional trade group reflects a caring attitude)
5) Will you allow request? (Requests should be welcome. If a song seems inappropriate, a good DJ will explain the reason and ask for an alternative selection.)
6) How early will you be there to set up? (An average of 60 minutes should be allowed for set-up and sound check. Normally there is no additional charge for this service.)
7) How will you be dressed? (Proper attire reflects a positive image to your guests.)
8) Are you insured? (Insurance is a part of any legitimate business. Liability and casualty policies protect yourself, your guests and your DJ company.)
9) Do you use professional gear? (Using professional sound equipment (including pro CD players) helps insure reliable and quality presentation.)
10) Will you provide an emergency back-up system at our event? (Weddings, Bar Mitzvahs and special events are often once in a lifetime opportunities. A back-up system protects your investment.)
(Here's one I added that is just as important)
11) Is all of your music licensed or do you possess downloaded or copied material? (Downloaded music off the internet or copied CD's is not only illegal but is also immoral. This is nothing more than theft, TWICE. Theft from the downloaded music itself, and theft from the artist who produced it, and now this type of DJ is profiting from this. THIS TYPE OF DJ SHOULD BE AVOIDED AT ALL COST! Not only does it speak volumes about the character of the DJ, but you also take a chance the DJ being raided and all their equipment confiscated, even IN the middle of your event.) This is one of the primary reasons professional DJ's cost what they do. Music is not cheap.
